I'm not a weeble, and I do fall down

Warning:  This post is strictly to whine and moan about the pain I'm in.

Ouch!  (I'm being polite)

I was trying to be careful.  I was trying to be quiet.

I left my coffee in my 17 month old sons room and it wasn't until he fell asleep for an unusual morning nap that I realized I needed to sneak back into his room.

My husband told me to make a fresh cup.  I could get it later.

But it was my Southern Pecan coffee.  And it was still warm.

I needed to get it.

I waited a good LONG five minutes until I knew J was asleep.  Then I made my move.

The plan was simple:
  1. Get in.
  2. Grab the coffee.
  3. Get out.
Simple right?  Well, that part was.  What I didn't take into consideration was the stairs leading back to the living room.  They creek and I was still trying to be quiet.  Tip toeing down the stairs.  In slippers.  I've done this before, plenty of times.  So I never gave it a thought of doing it wrong.  But I did.  I tip toed right off one of the stairs and tumbled down the last 5 steps.  My coffee mug, still warm, stayed in my hand.  But the coffee went with the flow and splashed all over the wall and stairs.

My husband was in the computer room and immediately heard the tumble.  He thought it was our son taking a leap of faith.  Nope.  Instead it was just me.  And all he could say was:  I thought we discussed this and you'd make another cup?  All I could do was laugh at the moment because I felt ridiculous, and then cry because I felt ridiculous, and I was in pain.  I think I bounced three times, my butt to my waist, to my neck.  They all hit the stairs.

I DID manage to save some of my coffee though, AND it was still warm.

My husband helped me clean the wall while I mopped up the stairs.  I needed to change my clothes (I guess it was time to get dressed anyways).  It wasn't until late last night that I realized how much coffee had spilled on me.  Our bedroom smelled like pecans.  I could have had a candle burning, it was that strong.

I should have known better.  Today I'm regretting the decision I made yesterday.  I think I would need to take a handful of aspirin to make my body stop aching.  Or maybe a steamy bath in a claw foot tub.  Oh I wish I had one of those right about now...

Can't sleep...

It was around 5:30 this morning when I woke up.  Anything after 3:30am gives me a small amount of anxiety because I start thinking, about anything.  I know this and when I see my clock (not this one) tell me the time anywhere after 3:30, I know my brain is going to start working.  So I guess 5:30 wasn't too bad.  But I was really looking forward to sleeping in till maybe 7:00.  Oh well.

I do like to enjoy the house be quiet in the morning.  The tinkling of the heat as it kicks on and the warmth trickles throughout the computer room.  I forgot to put my slippers on and creeping back into the bedroom would make me feel like I'm in a combat zone because I'd be tip toeing and ducking while trying not to wake my husband.  He's a light sleeper.

I did try to go back to bed, but I thought maybe I should ramble my thoughts here instead.  The things that go through my head at the early hours are silly.

Nuk.  That's the brand of the pacifiers my son uses.  We never called it Binky.  Nuk Nuk sounded silly to us so we went with it.  I only use the term when speaking with my son, or husband.  When my son started babbling words, one of the ones he decided to say was Ga Ga.  That's what he was calling the Nuk Nuk.  If we say either term to him, he knows what we're talking about.  So this morning, my mind was thinking about the Nuk Nuk and when to start weaning him off of it.  My thoughts have always lingered around 2 years old because around that time he'll be moving into the big bed.  But I would think I'd need to wean him off of the Nuk Nuk before the transition to the bed.  Right?  Then I thought I would need more than a weekend to transition him from the Nuk Nuk.  But really, how long does the transition last?  My mother was always told by her mother: 3 days.  Give any transition 3 days before the old habit goes away.  So that's what she did with me.  She took me out on our back porch when I was aroun 18 months and said we were going to get rid of the pacifier.  I actually don't know what they called it back then, but my dad refers to it the bink now.  Anyways, my mother and I pretended we were throwing away the bink over the side of the porch.  I watched it go.  That night, I searched for it.  My Mom says it broke her heart to see me search through the corners of the crib.  For 3 days I did that.  And her mother was right.  After the 3rd day, I stopped looking.  It was really gone.  But to this day that memory still breaks her heart.  I guess that is what I'm worried about, will my sons Nuk Nuk hold a guilty memory for me?  I hope not.

Marble.  We rescued Marble from the local animal shelter when he was 1.5 years old.
This was in June 2004.  My husband and I were living in an apartment at the time and the apartment complex had rules about pets.  They had to be spayed or neurtered.  That meant the cat wouldn't be a kitten.  Then the complex charged a rent fee for pets.  $30 for cats.  Every month for as long as we stayed there.  Highway robbery if you ask me.  But he was a good cat and he was our baby.  He doesn't like to be held though, it seems like he had a rough kitty-hood and was never cuddled with.  It makes me sad to think what he could have gone through.  I don't think he was with his mother very long either because he has attachment issues and will sit on the arm of the couch and lean in on you so close, he might as well be on your lap.  But he won't do that.  He has stinky breath to.  He has really bad gums and we've been told we should pay for a cleaning.  But that's $300, or maybe more if they have to extract a rotten tooth.  We love him and he is an indoor cat and has never done any harm to any of our furniture.  Or has he?  This morning while I tried to go back to sleep I heard Marble clawing at the arm of the couch.  Or maybe his claw was caught and he was trying to pull it out?  No, it was too loud for that.  We used to have a cardboard kitty claw thing in our computer room that Marble would use quite frequently.  There would be reminents of the cardboard pieces and catnip sprinkled around the box.  The box was only $5 but I felt it was well worth the month since he used it.  But then when J was mobile and exploring every crevace in our home (we haven't really baby proofed), Marble's cardboard scratcher had to be moved.  J was starting to eat the little cardboard flakes that were around the box.  Marble is our first baby, but has been a trooper with have a new kid around.  It took him a while, but Marble has warmed up to J.  But after hearing Marble scratch the couch this morning made me realize there are things Marble still needs (ie: toys), and maybe get a new cardboard scratcher.

Coffee.  I've thought about making a cup ever since I saw the clock at 5:30 and have been trying to figure out how to maneuver through the kitchen without turning the light on.  Thanks to the daylight saving time change, 5:30 is like 4:30 still and it's pitch black outside.  Our bedroom is just down the hall from the kitchen and any light from the kitchen would seep into our bedroom and my light sleeper of a husband would blink his eyes and wonder what I was doing.  Yes, there are weekend mornings that he'll actually wake up very early just to have a cup of coffee.  But I didn't trust myself moving through the dark kitchen so quietly.  But since starting this post, the sky has gotten brighter and my husband is now awake.  Only to complain about how low the heat was and how cold he was when he woke up earlier this morning.  The bill last month was ridiculous and for some reason I'm the only one understanding that the heat has to be lower than it has been.

Oh the warmer days cannot get here fast enough.

I can't wait to plant my herbs, or even get outside and make a small garden.  I won't be able to do any digging today though, despite the warm temperatures.  Here in New England we could get snow tomorrow if Mother Nature decided to do so.  Any planting will have to wait until May.

And with that, I'm going to go enjoy my first cup of coffee of the day.  My lovely husband just told me it's the brew from Peru.

K-cup update

I've been using the Keurig brewer since Christmas, and have not had any disappointments with the quality.  My only concern is about the K-cups.  So I sent an email to the Keurig customer service center and inquired about recycling their K-cups.  Here was their response:

Thank you for your inquiry. The current structure of the K-Cup includes Oxygen and moisture barrier materials in order to maintain coffee freshness. As a result, the K-Cup is not recyclable. This is a universal issue throughout the food packaging industry and challenging for the companies to find environmentally friendly packaging materials. Keurig is currently engaged and aggressively investing in R&D to find alternate materials that will be recyclable and/or bio-degradable.

Keurig is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc., which is a leader in corporate social and environmental responsibility. With Green Mountain, we support local and global communities by investing in Fair Trade Certified coffee, offsetting 100% of our direct greenhouse gas emissions and donating at least 5% of pre-tax earnings to social and environmental causes. GMCR is the first company to be ranked #1 on the Business Ethics list of America’s most ethical and socially – responsible business two years in a row.

Again, thank you and if we can assist you further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I know Keurig has the reusable K-cup but I have really enjoyed picking individual flavors each morning.  So for now, I will wait and see how Keurig will find a solution to the compromise.

Bathing in coffee

Saturday morning was a typical morning.  Wake up, make some coffee, play with J, make breakfast, clean up and get ready for the day.  Nothing to crazy, right?

Well this particular morning I decided to use my Steamboat Willie mug (one of my favorites).  J has only seen this mug a handful of times because I have a few favorites that I like to use, depending on my mood.  J absolutely loves Mickey Mouse and will refer to him as 'Ickey'.  So this morning he was SO excited I was using the Ickey mug.  Of course he doesn't understand why he can't touch it, but that's okay, I explain anyways and hope he retains something I said.

We finish breakfast and while I'm cleaning up the dishes, my husband is finishing his coffee on the couch and watching his home improvement shows on HGTV.  J is padding around the kitchen through the living room and around again, getting into anything and everything.  Of course, there was the Icky mug, sitting on the kitchen table way up high, but no longer out of his little arms reach.

It all happened so fast, yet it appeared in slow motion as I watched it happen.  I'm at the sink washing dishes, I overhear J babbling about something so I turn to see what he's doing.  Of course!  Steamboat Willie is right there, how can he resist!  J grabs the handle and slowly tips the mug off the table.  Meanwhile I'm dashing around the kitchen trying to grab the mug (filled with coffee) before he could get to it.  I'm not even at his side when I see coffee spill out of the mug and onto the floor.  Next thing I know I'm sliding in and around him, thanks to the fresh coffee on the ceramic tile floor.  I grab the mug from him and in doing so, I end up spilling the rest of the coffee all over J's face!  The mug ended up on the floor, shattered.

By this time my husband is in the kitchen with us and we're both horrifed that we'll be seeing little boils of blisters appearing on J's face.  I take him to the sink and can only think of dunking his head under the faucet.  I stop myself before doing that and really take a good look at what happened to his face.  He's crying hysterically and his face is red.  Luckily my coffee had been in the mug for a while and it wasn't hot like I had expected it to be.  It was more like bath water.  Still, J was upset.  Clearly, this was a traumatic situation!

I'm glad J is ok.  But my Steamboat Willie mug was thrown straight into the trash.

I've since looked online to try and find where I can buy a replacement, but it seems like they are collectables now.  I did find a random picture of one, maybe someday I'll have another one.

Coffee Break

I'm not the type of person who needs a cup of coffee every day. I don't know why, I just have never been that way. Our big fancy coffee maker is a grind and brew. This requires a lot of cleaning when you have to make a fresh pot. So my coffee consumption has only been 2 cups max.

However, we have recently started using the Keurig coffee maker. Now, well, I look forward to selecting my coffee of choice from our carrousel, feed the k-cup into the brewer and secure the cover. We have the brewer that gives two options for cup size: small and large. I select small so I have a stronger flavored coffee this morning. Quietly my Keurig goes to work, heating and brewing my coffee for me and within minutes my cup is full and waiting.

I've tried the hot cocoa in the Keurig. That's good too, but there is something about the coffee. It's so simple and easy to make! I look forward to my daily coffee break whenever I can. My son "J" tries to limit that time from me though. He is 13 months and is such a busy bee. Most times I have to reheat my perfect cup of coffee, which isn't the same as the first time it brewed, but still yummy.

My 2 cup a day has now turned to 4-6 cups! I am realizing that there may be an issue developing, especially when I see those little k-cups piling up... which by the way they do not look like they can be recycled. I will have to look into that.
